UNV Component support to the UNDP-GEF Global ABS Project
The UNDP-GEF Global ABS Project “Strengthening human resources, legal frameworks and institutional capacities to implement the Nagoya Protocol” relays on United Nations Volunteers (UNV) as a Responsible Party.
Under this figure, UNV brings the strength of volunteerism for supporting institutional capacity-building, awareness-raising and south-south cooperation activities towards the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol and the contribution to the 3 objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
At a regional level, UNV works in 5 countries of the Latin American and the Caribbean region: Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Honduras, Panama and Uruguay. Within this scope of action, UNV seeks to build capacities of national volunteers in order to serve as valuable social asset for fostering the participation of indigenous and local communities (ILCs) in national ABS policy-making processes and for promoting awareness-raising on the importance of genetic resources, traditional knowledge and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits from their use.
At a global level, UNV contributes to establish and to manage the Global ABS Community, the community of practice on ABS, as a means of sharing knowledge between recipient countries and to facilitate the mapping of experts and technical needs on ABS under a south-south cooperation mechanism.
