Nature based solutions for sustainable development: Sudan´s ABS biodiscovery project
In Sudan, NCR and partners launched an integrated research and development programme to develop formulations of medicines and cosmetics based on traditional
knowledge associated with medicinal and aromatic plants. This is the case of senna (Cassia acutifolia, fabaceae), aperennial wild herb indigenous to tropical Africa and
india with purgative properties attributed to the presence of anthraquinone derivatives and their glycosides.
Establishing an Abs-compliant senna value chain will significantly contribute to the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs). These SDGs include, but are not limited to, rural development, economic growth, food security, improved nutrition, health and sustainable agriculture and innovation in addition to also opening a window for international partnerships.
